Tasting Notes The 2005 vintage of our Vin Gris of Syrah was, once again, managed by Carole. She seems to have an uncanny ability to tell us how to structure this wine so that it retains a slight sweetness but has the right balance of acidity and complex structure that creates the serious wine you have come to expect from our winery. This year, David Vergari has joined us in winemaking since Greg has devoted more time to his work at DeLoach. With both of them working with Carole, it was great fun to watch this wine evolve. The final product is easily the finest example of this wine we have produced. The color is almost the same hue as in the past but with more clarity and brilliance. The nose is more true to the Syrah grape from which it comes and the fruit flavor is fabulous. Again, the complexity of this wine makes it a wonderful accompaniment to most food, but particularly mayonnaise based sauces. We would like you to note that, with this vintage, we have changed the AVA to Bennett Valley from Sonoma Mountain. While we are in the overlap of these two fine AVAs, we feel that the distinctive characteristics that have come to be recognized as "Bennett Valley" more closely define the wines that we produce.
Winemaking Notes With the crush of 2005, we were faced with new challenges. The ripening of the Syrah block was a little uneven, with the Southeast corner being almost a week delayed. This led to some concern about how much of which component should participate in the sangier from which we make our VinGris. As you probably guessed, we took some from each lot, combined them and fermented them together in neutral oak. Having shut down the fermentation slightly less than dry, the secondary fermentation went off more easily than expected. Prior to bottling on April 7th, the wine was cold stablized(a new wrinkle for our production of this wine) and filtered. 69 cases were produced.
